• I started with Sketching the general shape of the subject. The brush I used is similar to a real pencil.
• I set the Sketch layer blending mode to Multiply and I created a new layer filled with two colors.
• I started painting without adding details just for understand lights and shadows.
• You can use any brush you want but the secret is to set a low ”flow rate of stroke”. Usually 10% or 17%.
• I brushed for some hours, adjust details. Another small secret is the use of the Dodge tool (O) for special effects. (see the eye!)

How to add and use a downloaded brush?
PHOTOSHOP: Select the Brush Tool (B), open the Brushes Window (F5) and open the dropdown menu (click che little arrow on top right of the palette) and pick “Load Brushes”. Choose the file and the new brushes will come into the list.

ILLUSTRATOR: Open the Brushes Window (F5) and into the dropdown menu choose “Open Brush Library”, then “Other Library”. Pick your file and it will come into the list.

Transforming bitmap into vector has always been a problem: softwares produced abomination filled with millions of points into paths. Never again!

Create a vector file from a picture draw has become easy thanks to two programs:
* Adobe Illustrator CS3 has a brand new LiveTrace with fully editable functions.
* Vector Magic s an online program created by J. Diebel and J.Norda from University of Stanfort that allows you to do everything via browser (supports Mozilla) and download the files in EPS, SVG and PNG.

Neither creates perfect files: both need to be corrected with Illustrator but are a valuable aid to the designer that has not much free time at work.

First I sketch with pencil on paper (yes, sometimes I use traditional tools… that’s incredible!). My sketches are based on Ish’s script.
Usually I send my sketch via email to Ish and Starpig who help me with critics.

Prima di tutto skizzo a matita su carta (Si, a volte uso tecniche tradizionali, difficile a credersi eh?). I miei skizzi sono basati sulla sceneggiatura di Ish.
In genere spedisco via mail gli skizzi ad Ish e Starpig che mi aiutano con le critiche. Ovviamente si svia parecchio dal discorso come vi dimostra questo scambio di battute:
Starpig:Allora la Foglia Rossa non è il locale notturno gay nel quale Liam e i suoi usano sollazzarsi, che tollera un solo abbigliamento (foglia di fico, rossa) e nel quale vogliono portare a tradimento Dagon?
Ish: Potrebbe essere un’idea interessante… quasi quasi cambio la trama! =p
Ophy: Vergognati, dovevi dami una mano mica farmi ridere appena sveglia!

ieri ho disegnato questa Almea che si rilassa in solitudine su una poltrona in soffitta, ci ho messo poco tempo e mi sono divertita e stamattina quando mi sono svegliata fremevo dalla voglia di disegnarne un altro. Questo è il mio primo esperimento di speedpainting, spero di fare di meglio la prossima volta. E’ comunque interessante vedere come ho dipinto un disegno partendo da una fotografia. In particolare è il ritratto di mio fratello con la sua ragazza.

I know a lot of people (like me) appreciate to see how to born an illustration so I have just created an album for tutorials and progress-art. For “yaoi kiss” I used MangaStudio for the lineart using a picture as reference.
It’s colored by PhotoshopCS2 with a Linda’s brush.
First I recommend to get ready with a color palette and whenever the coloring is finished you can play with some textures and the blending mode of layers.
Some words in the background can be added for a decorative purpose.

So che molte persone (come me) amano vedere come nasce un’ illustrazione così ho appena creato un album per i tutorial e i cosiddetti passaggi. Per yaoi kiss ho utilizzato MangaStudio per disegnare il lineart usando una fotografia come riferimento.
La colorazione e’ stata realizzata con Photoshop CS2 ed un pennello di Linda .
Consiglio di prepararsi la tavolozza dei colori prima di cominciare a dipingere in modo da non pasticciare troppo.
Una volta finita la colorazione si puo’ giocare con qualche texture e con i metodi di fusione dei livelli. Anche qualche parola sullo sfondo puo’ venire aggiunta a fini decorativi.
